The Martial Heritage of Kerala
Kalarippayattu is Kerala’s traditional martial art and one of India’s most distinctive living martial traditions. The word combines Kalari, meaning the traditional training space, and Payattu, meaning practice or training. Historically, the Kalari served as more than a martial training ground. It was a place where students developed physical discipline, body awareness, coordination and mental focus under the guidance of a Gurukkal, the traditional master.
The Traditional Path of Training
Traditional Kalarippayattu training develops the body progressively. Students begin with Meythari, the foundational body exercises that develop:
- Flexibility
- Strength
- Balance
- Coordination
- Agility
- Endurance
- Concentration
- Body awareness
As students develop greater physical control, training may progress to traditional weapon practices such as Kolthari and Ankathari. Kalarippayattu is not simply about combat. At its deeper level, it is a discipline of body and mind.
